Hearty Black Bean Burgers (Print)

# Ingredients:

01 - 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
02 - 1/2 cup rolled oats (gluten-free if desired)

03 - 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped
04 - 1 small carrot, grated
05 - 2 cloves garlic, minced

→ Binders & Flavorings

06 - 2 tbsp ground flaxseed (or chia seed) mixed with 6 tbsp water
07 - 2 tbsp tomato paste
08 - 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
09 - 1 tsp smoked paprika
10 - 1/2 tsp ground cumin
11 - 1/2 tsp chili powder
12 - 1/2 tsp salt
13 - 1/4 tsp black pepper

→ To Cook

14 - 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil

→ To Serve (optional)

15 - 4 whole wheat or gluten-free burger buns
16 - Lettuce leaves
17 - Tomato slices
18 - Avocado slices
19 - Vegan mayonnaise or ketchup

# Directions:

01 - Combine ground flaxseed with water in a small bowl and allow to thicken for 5 minutes.
02 - In a large bowl, mash black beans using a fork or potato masher, leaving some texture intact.
03 - Add oats, chopped onion, grated carrot, minced garlic, tomato paste, soy sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the beans and mix thoroughly.
04 - Stir in the thickened flaxseed mixture until fully combined.
05 - Allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes to absorb moisture.
06 - Shape the mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.
07 - Warm olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
08 - Fry patties for 5 to 6 minutes on each side until crisp and golden brown.
09 - Place patties on buns and add preferred toppings such as lettuce, tomato, avocado, and vegan condiments.
