Nutella Puff Pastry Trees (Print)

Flaky puff pastry with creamy Nutella shaped into festive golden trees, ideal for holiday treats.

# Ingredients:

→ Pastry

01 - 2 sheets puff pastry (8.8 oz each), thawed if frozen

→ Filling

02 - 4.2 oz Nutella (chocolate-hazelnut spread)

→ Finish

03 - 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
04 - 1 tbsp powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)

# Directions:

01 - Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
02 - Unroll both puff pastry sheets. Spread Nutella evenly over one sheet, leaving a 0.4-inch border.
03 - Place the second pastry sheet on top, creating a Nutella sandwich.
04 - Use a sharp knife or tree-shaped cookie cutter to cut tree shapes about 5–6 inches tall. Re-roll scraps to make additional trees as needed.
05 - Transfer the trees to the prepared baking tray. Carefully cut horizontal slits on each side of the tree to form branches, leaving the trunk intact. Gently twist each branch for decoration.
06 - Brush each tree with the beaten egg evenly to promote browning.
07 - Bake for 16 to 18 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
08 - Allow to cool slightly, then optionally dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • They look fancy enough to impress guests but take less time than you'd think to put together.
  • Your kitchen fills with that irresistible buttery-chocolate aroma while they bake—honestly worth the effort just for that.
  • Kids and adults both go wild for them, making them perfect for holiday gatherings or sneaky mid-afternoon treats.
02 -
  • Don't skip the cooling time—I learned this by burning my mouth trying to eat one immediately, and it's not worth it when they taste just as good in a few minutes anyway.
  • Keep your pastry sheets cold until the very moment you start working with them, because warm pastry gets sticky and tears instead of cutting cleanly.
  • The egg wash makes a visible difference in how golden and impressive they look, so don't skip it thinking it's optional.
03 -
  • If your Nutella is too thick to spread, microwave it for just 10 seconds to make it more pliable—this changes everything and prevents pastry tearing.
  • Cut the trees with a hot, wet knife and wipe it clean between cuts, which gives you cleaner edges and makes the pastry less likely to stick and tear.
